Media Guide

The BN20 is one of the most capable desktop print-and-cut machines on the market. But getting the most out of it starts with running the right media. This guide walks you through what to look for and which PerfectCut Vinyl rolls work best for common BN20 workflows.

What to Look for in BN20-Compatible Media

The BN20 uses eco-solvent ink and a built-in optical eye for print-and-cut registration. That means your media needs to check three boxes:

1. Eco-solvent ink compatibility

The BN20 runs eco-solvent inks, so your vinyl needs a receptive coating designed to hold those inks without beading, bleeding, or extended dry times. All PerfectCut Vinyl media is eco-solvent compatible.

2. Clean feeding and consistent tracking

The BN20's narrow feed path requires media that lies flat, feeds straight, and does not curl or wander. A 90lb layflat liner makes a real difference here, especially on longer runs.

3. Reliable optical eye detection

Print-and-cut registration depends on the BN20's optical sensor reading your crop marks accurately. High-contrast white or matte surfaces work best. Specialty finishes like holographic vinyl require a workaround (see below).

PerfectCut Vinyl Picks for the BN20

Best for Everyday Stickers and Decals

6PG: 6.0 Mil Gloss White Printable Vinyl

The go-to for most BN20 shops. The 6.0 mil thickness makes it easier to handle and weed than thinner films, and the gloss surface produces vivid, high-contrast prints. Feeds cleanly and tracks reliably.

Best for High Volume Production Runs

3PG: 3.0 Mil Gloss White Printable Vinyl

A thinner, more economical option that still delivers clean prints on the BN20. Great for high volume sticker and decal runs where you want to keep material costs down without sacrificing print quality. Permanent adhesive, gloss finish, eco-solvent compatible.

Best for Window and Clear Decals

Clear / Translucent Printable Vinyl

Clear vinyl on the BN20 opens up window decal, bumper sticker, and see-through graphic workflows. Print white ink as a base layer first for opacity, or go clear-on-clear for a frosted effect.

Best for High-Impact Specialty Stickers

6RH: Rainbow Holographic Printable Vinyl

The BN20 can absolutely run holographic vinyl. The one thing to keep in mind: the reflective surface can interfere with optical eye registration. Fix it by printing white or yellow behind your crop marks, or applying a small piece of matte vinyl over the registration area before cutting.

Laminates: Protect Every Print You Make

Even on a desktop machine like the BN20, lamination is not optional if your prints need to last. A 3.0 mil overlaminate guards against scratching, moisture, UV exposure, and everyday handling. Choose gloss to boost color vibrancy and give prints a polished finish, or matte for a softer, low-glare look that photographs well and feels premium. Both the L3GC (gloss) and L3MC (matte) are cold-apply, compatible with your BN20 workflow, and designed to pair cleanly with the vinyl rolls above.

Quick Tips for BN20 Media Runs

  • Load media straight and check tension before hitting print. The BN20's narrow path is unforgiving if the roll wanders early.
  • Run a test cut on a small section before committing to a full production run on a new roll or media type.
  • Laminate whenever graphics will be handled, shipped, or used outdoors. Our vinyl is compatible with standard cold laminators.
  • For holographic runs, slow your cut speed slightly and test registration accuracy before a full batch.
  • Eco-solvent inks need dry time. Give prints at least 15 to 30 minutes before laminating or cutting for best results.
